From Michael San Filippo, your Guide to Italian
Caro Lettore,

Welcome to this weekend's edition of your About.com Italian Language Newsletter. In a land well-renowned for its culinary traditions, perhaps it was inevitable that the national language academy of Italy would be named for a byproduct of the bread-making process.

In the About.com Italian Language forums a community member wants to know how to choose between ciao, salve, and buongiorno, and a discussion about pronouncing Italian pronouns. Plus the twenty-sixth canto of Purgatorio in Dante's The Divine Comedy in both Italian and English, which takes place in the afternoon of April 12, 1300 (or March 29, according to some commentators). Lastly, there are Italian abbreviations and acronyms beginning with the letter G.

Accademia della Crusca
The Italian society was founded in Florence in 1582 to separate the literary wheat from the linguistic chaff, and maintain the purity of the Italian language.

The Divine Comedy: Purgatorio: Canto XXVI
"Mentre che sì per l'orlo, uno innanzi altro, / ce n'andavamo, e spesso il buon maestro / diceami: «Guarda: giovi ch'io ti scaltro»..."
